When trying to keep your business as safe as possible, most people do not remember the upkeep that a smoke detector needs. Other than changing the batteries consistently, it is also important to clean the detectors to extend the life of them. Here is our advice on how and when you need to do this.

How to clean the smoke detector

Smoke detector units can accumulate many things such as dust, debris, and even cobwebs. To start, you will need a vacuum cleaner and a microfiber towel. Depending on the number of smoke detectors that you have in your building, this process should be fairly quick.

Take your vacuum cleaner and use a soft brush attachment to get rid of the dirt. You will need to remove the face of the smoke detector to get inside and clean around in there as well.

Once you have finished using the vacuum, this is when you will need your microfiber towel. Spray a light cleaner onto the towel. It is important that you do not spray any cleaning supplies directly on the smoke detector, as this may cause future malfunctions within the system. Using the towel, wipe down all parts of your smoke detectors, being sure that you have removed all built-up debris and dirt from the unit. Also, make sure that you have cleared all of the vent openings so that the sensor inside will not be obstructed.

How often do you need to clean a smoke detector?

Depending on the locations of your smoke detectors, you will need to clean them at least once every six months. Of course, this can correlate with the amount of dirt in the air that can cause them to become dirty. If your business is in an area with high wind levels, you might need to clean your smoke detector a little more often. Wind in dusty areas can cause debris to collect quickly.
